Some Questions You Might Be Asking
How do our point-to-point Wi-Fi expansion packs work?
Our system uses point-to-point Wi-Fi technology to extend your network coverage over long distances. Here's how it works:
- The first unit (point A) is installed at your main connection point (like your house) where your internet providers router is housed.
- A second unit (point B) is installed at your desired location (like a water tank or shed).
- These units create a dedicated wireless bridge between the two points.
- The signal is transmitted directly between these points, similar to an invisible ethernet cable.
- The second unit (point B) is connected to a router that is included in the pack and this creates a local Wi-Fi network at the remote location. Please note the router needs to be indoors/under cover.
This setup allows you to extend your internet connection to locations that would be impractical or impossible to reach with traditional cabling, making it ideal for farms, large properties, and remote monitoring applications.
How do radial Wi-Fi expansion packs work?
Our radial Wi-Fi expansion packs create a 360-degree Wi-Fi coverage zone around a central point. Here's how they work:
- The system is installed at a central location (like a pole or high point), Mounting Point MUST have LAN internet connection.
- It broadcasts a Wi-Fi signal in all directions (like a dome).
- Any device within range can connect to this network.
- Coverage typically extends up to 112m to 200m in all directions from the central point*.
This type of setup is ideal for:
- Creating Wi-Fi coverage across yards and working areas
- Connecting multiple devices in different directions
- Providing internet access to equipment and devices that move around within the coverage area
*Note: Actual coverage area may vary depending on terrain, obstacles, and environmental conditions.
How good does my line of sight need to be?
Clear, unobstructed line of sight is essential for optimal performance of point-to-point Wi-Fi connections. This means:
- The path between connection points should be free from physical obstacles such as:
- Trees and vegetation
- Buildings and structures
- Hills or elevated terrain
A direct visual line between the connection points is the best way to confirm suitable line of sight. If you can't see from one point to the other, your Wi-Fi signal will likely face interference or may not work at all.
Think of it like shining a flashlight - any obstacle that would block the light will also potentially block or degrade your Wi-Fi signal.
If you are unsure if your line of sight will be good or not please reach out to the team and we will be happy to discuss and help find you a solution.
What if I don't have power available at one of the connection points?
Yes, we have a solution! We offer a Solar Kit specifically designed to work with our Wi-Fi expansion packs. This means you can set up your connection points even in locations without access to mains power.
Our Solar Kit:
- Provides reliable power to our Wi-Fi equipment
- Eliminates the need for mains power connection
- Works seamlessly with our Wi-Fi expansion packs
This can be particularly useful for remote locations like:
- Water tanks
- Outbuildings
- Monitoring points
- Sheds
- Woolsheds
- Yards
Will I need a PoE (Power over Ethernet) switch?
You will need a PoE switch in these situations:
- If your router's LAN ports at Point A are already being used for other devices or applications
- If you plan to combine multiple WiFi packs together (for example, connecting a point-to-point system with a radial expansion pack)
These switches allow you to power and connect multiple devices through a single ethernet cable, making your installation cleaner and more efficient.
Important: If either of these scenarios applies to you, please reach out to our team and we'll include a PoE switch with your invoice/order.
Can I chain two 5km point-to-point Wi-Fi connections to extend coverage beyond 5km?
Yes, it's technically possible to chain two 5km point-to-point WiFi connections, but this isn't the recommended solution. Here's what you need to know:
- While feasible, this setup will result in reduced signal strength by 50% each connection and potentially degraded performance the further you get from the original connection point.
- We recommend installing a separate internet connection at your remote location for optimal performance.
Important Requirements: Before proceeding with a chained setup, please confirm:
- Clear line of sight exists between:
- The originating point and middle point
- The middle point and termination point
- 240V power supply is available at all three locations:
- Origin point
- Middle point
- Termination point
Please Note, the same applies to the 500m point-to-point Wi-Fi connection.
If I can't get direct line of sight to point B, such as my water tank, can I route the Wi-Fi connection through other buildings (like sheds) to reach it?
Yes, you can create a multi-point connection using buildings like sheds as relay points to reach your water tank. This works similarly to the chained connection setup mentioned above.
Requirements: For this setup to work, you'll need:
- Clear line of sight between each consecutive connection point (e.g., house to shed, shed to water tank)
- 240V power available at each connection point along the route
- A suitable mounting point at each location
Note: Keep in mind that signal strength may decrease with each additional connection point in the chain. We can help you design the most efficient route for your specific situation.
What will the Wi-Fi speeds be like at Point B?
Wi-Fi speeds at Point B depend on several factors:
- Speed of the Originating Internet Connection: The internet speed at Point A directly impacts the maximum speed achievable at Point B.
- Distance: The further Point B is from the originating connection, the more the signal strength and speeds may degrade.
- Line of Sight: Clear, unobstructed line of sight between Point A and Point B ensures optimal speeds.
- Interference: Physical obstacles or environmental interference can reduce speed and performance.
How easy is it to install?
Installing our Wi-Fi expansion packs are designed to be straightforward with the right tools and preparation. Here’s what to expect:
- Step-by-Step Instructions: We provide clear installation guides to walk you through the setup process.
- Basic Tools Required: Installation typically requires common tools such as a drill and a ladder for mounting hardware.
- Professional Support Available: If you prefer, we can recommend professional installers to handle the setup for you.
Key Considerations:
- Ensure clear line of sight between connection points.
- Verify access to power (or use our Solar Kit for off-grid locations).
- Test the connection during setup to confirm optimal performance.
What kind of internet service do I need at Point A?
Point A requires a stable and high-speed internet connection to ensure optimal performance of the Wi-Fi extension system. Here’s what to consider:
- Type of Connection: Broadband services like NBN, fibre, or Starlink are ideal.
- Bandwidth: A connection with sufficient bandwidth to support your usage needs, including any devices connected at Point B.
- Reliability: A consistent and reliable connection ensures uninterrupted performance of the extended Wi-Fi network.
If you’re unsure whether your current internet setup is suitable, reach out to our team for advice or testing recommendations.
Can the Wi-Fi expansion system handle multiple devices simultaneously?
Yes, our Wi-Fi expansion packs are designed to support multiple devices at the same time. Here’s how it works:
- Bandwidth Distribution: The system distributes available bandwidth across all connected devices, so performance depends on the speed of the originating internet connection.
- Device Capacity: The number of devices it can handle effectively depends on your internet speed and the types of activities (e.g., streaming, downloading) being performed.
- Recommended Use: For best performance, we recommend prioritising critical devices or tasks during high usage times.
Do I need special mounting equipment?
In most cases, you won’t need any special mounting equipment beyond what is provided in the pack. However, here are some considerations:
- Standard Mounting Options: We supply mounts and brackets that are suitable for most common installation surfaces, such as poles, walls, or rooftops.
- Optional Mounts: For challenging installation locations, additional mounting equipment may be required.
- Custom Solutions: If you have specific installation needs, our team can guide you on suitable solutions.
For the best results, ensure the mounting location provides clear line of sight and is accessible for maintenance.
How do I ensure my equipment stays weatherproof?
All the equipment in the Wi-Fi extension packs that are required to be installed outdoors is weatherproof. Here’s how we ensure durability:
- Weatherproof Design: Our outdoor equipment is built to withstand harsh weather conditions, including rain, wind, and extreme temperatures.
- Sealed Enclosures: The devices feature sealed enclosures to protect internal components from moisture and dust.
- Maintenance Tips: While the equipment is designed to be weather-resistant, it’s a good idea to periodically check for any debris or build-up around the device to maintain optimal performance.
Can I use these Wi-Fi expansion packs in areas with frequent power outages?
Yes, the Wi-Fi expansion packs can be used in areas with frequent power outages, and we offer a solar power solution to ensure continuous operation:
- Solar Kit: Our Solar Kit is designed to power the Wi-Fi expansion packs in off-grid or power outage-prone areas for Point B. It provides a reliable alternative to mains power, keeping your system running even during outages.
- Power at Originating Location: It’s important to ensure that the originating Wi-Fi location (e.g., your house) also has a stable power supply. If power outages are frequent at the originating point, you would require a backup power solution to maintain connectivity.
